Total Eclipse Of The Sun 2009
On July 22, 2009, the sun will disappear behind the moon in a total solar eclipse for parts of India, China, and other nearby countries.Solar eclipse can occur only in the new moon phase of the moon. In this phase, the illuminated side of the moon is pointed away from the earth and the sun and moon are in conjunction. This phase occurs every 29.5 days.

It is known that the Moon is smaller than the Sun in size then how is that we observe the Moon covering the Sun totally on total solar eclipse? The reason is their apparent sizes. The match between the apparent sizes of the Sun and Moon during a total eclipse is a coincidence. The phases before a total solar eclipse and those viewing from the areas of partial eclipse must use protection when looking at the sun.

On Wednesday 22 July 2009 a Total Eclipse will be visible from the Arabian Sea just off the west coast of India at sunrise, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, China, Japanese Islands, near Kiribati and Gilbert Islands, near French Polynesia, mid-Pacific at sunset. This will be an extremely long Total Solar Eclipse - 6 minutes 39 seconds.
